Dysfunction junction what’s your function? Keeping our beaches open while everyone else closes their beaches for the holiday weekend. We are the Bay Area’s doormat for the 4th of July. We also had a carjacker drive off West Cliff Drive into the Pacific Ocean in the middle of a busy afternoon (thankfully not killing anyone in the process), we had a guy shooting at people and running them off Highway 17, a racist thug got arrested downtown, wildfires don’t care about our COVID problems, exploding bum trailers on Delaware, fatal crash near Depot Park, a couple of local perverts arrested for sex crimes with minors, turnstiler of the week, get out of jail free cards are back, no bail and still in jail, exploding porta potty in Garfield Park, the drunken brawl at Alderwood, Santa Cruz city council race updates, vibrant honesty from the Santa Cruz Grand Jury, the Weekly Seen, and more! Bring on the tourists and their nasty coronavirus because the beaches in Santa Cruz are open for business and infecting! What a week. So much for a slow quiet summer in Santa Cruz this year. You probably heard about the murder and mayhem in Ben Lomond so there’s that. We’re talking about the guy “from” Santa Cruz shooting up SLO before cops finally killed him in a gun battle yesterday. Oh, and there’s that pesky pandemic we’re dealing with. We also had a fire torch the Pogonip, a suspected pipe bomb on West Cliff, the Mission got vandalized by a bunch of assholes, the zero bail COVID program ends, an update on the local city council races, and more.

If I had to sum up this week in Santa Cruz (and our country) in one word, that word would be angry. This week, we remembered George Floyd (in both good and bad ways), we had a shooting downtown, stolen truck thieves arrested in New Leaf parking lot, John Law meets John Deere, not getting out of jail for free, name this douche, the Boardwalk is still closed, BoS special meeting notes, Capitola Mall reopens, and life hacks with Abuela.

Happy May Day! It’s been a crazy and violent week here in Santa Cruz, especially if you consider people were supposed to be sheltering in place. Which seems to bring out the worst in some people. This week, the beaches are kind of open?, we’ve got a murder victim found in the Soquel hills, a couple of stabbings off Laurel and Coral streets, a porta potty dump truck ran over a homeless guy sleeping in San Lorenzo park, attempted murder isn’t much of a local news story, so much for protecting the victim, more mayhem on Coral street, double the trouble, hefty bail for local car thief, joy riding ends with a trip to jail, Felton and Aptos robbery suspects arrested, Grant Street Park jerk, the new “public safety”, turnstiler of the week, motorcyclist killed on Highway 9, Chaminade villa burns down, a functional city council again, district elections are coming, and the madness of The Wicker Man.
