Stabbing in Boulder Creek Leads to Twenty Hour Standoff With Sheriff’s Deputies

Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies were finally able to arrest a 73 year old Boulder Creek man after he apparently stabbed his daughter’s boyfriend multiple times on Wednesday night and held off deputies for almost 20 hours before surrendering peacefully. The stabbing occurred in the 26000 block of Highway 9 around 5:30PM on Wednesday. The suspect barricaded himself in his bedroom for 20 hours before deputies were able to peacefully get him out of his home around 2PM on Thursday. During the standoff, the sheriff’s office believed the suspect had multiple firearms in the house. The adult victim was flown to a Bay Area trauma center and was last listed in stable condition. The suspect was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on one count of assault with a deadly weapon.

Man With Bat Smashes Cars and Threatens People at It’s Beach

Tuesday night around 8:30PM, multiple reports came in about a homeless man who started smashing windows and threatening people with a bat or some kind of stick. SCPD sent multiple units to the scene along West Cliff near Columbia. The suspect took off into the surrounding neighborhood as SCPD fanned out looking for him, then he apparently jumped over the railing on the cliff side. There ended up being at least 4 separate victims of his vandalism here. The kook walked out on the rocks where he stripped naked and jumped in the ocean. Mahalo mi amigo. Float away to Hawaii for all I care. When you evade police by jumping in the ocean under your own free will, good luck. Mother nature isn’t as compassionate as Santa Cruz progressives are. After a few minutes, he realized he was pretty cold and climbed back up on the rocks, where he was tasered by SCPD before they arrested him (just for good measure I guess! They had enough of this clown). Does being hit with a taser when you’re wet and naked hurt even more? I don’t think I want to find out. While all this drama was playing out, a drunk was being belligerent and resisting arrest at the lighthouse at Steamer Lane, so units had to be to also be diverted there.

Early Morning Stabbing Victim Found at Safeway on Mission

Monday morning around 4AM, I got a report of a stabbing victim at the Safeway on Mission. Apparently, the suspect left the scene driving a 2 door Mustang. A Project ROPE was also initiated. SCPD seemed to pick up the Mustang on Highway 1 going south as the suspected vehicle got off on Morrissey. CHP joined the pursuit and together with SCPD they did a high risk stop around 4:30AM. It appears they got their guy as the suspect was arrested and two people were detained. The victim was transported to Dominican and two other witnesses saw the stabbing and were able to ID the suspect after the arrest. The 2 witnesses were apparently in the car with the suspect, and the victim and saw the stabbing take place in the vehicle near Davenport. Bum campers stabbing each other in the middle of the night. Take a drive up the coast road some time around sunset. It’s like a traveling circus.

Shooting at Saturday Morning Flea Market

Saturday morning around 10AM, there were reports of a shooting at the Flea Market. The victim was taken to nearby Dominican while the suspect apparently got away. The suspect’s vehicle was found a short time later and the suspect was described as a Hispanic male dressed in black with a shaved head. It doesn’t appear that anyone was arrested for this, and news in the local mainstream media has been typically non-existent and terrible. I saw the SCSO put out a press release saying there was no danger to the community, but they haven’t caught or arrested anyone and have no suspects. So they’ve obviously moved on from this and expect the community to do the same.

Another Massive Brawl Downtown

This one was massive. SCPD required reinforcements from UCSC and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. Apparently there was a concert featuring a rapper who seems to be a magnet for violence (imagine that!). And it also happened to be the weekend all the local high schools had graduation, so there were lots of drunk local kids out and about the downtown area that night. Witnesses reported up to a hundred people fighting out front or in the parking lot next door. I don’t think anyone died here, but given the complete lack of local news coverage (especially bad Fridays through Sundays), I’m not assuming anything. I don’t even know if they arrested anyone. Probably not.

Head On Crash on Laurel Requires Helicopter Evacuations to Trauma Centers

Wednesday night, a head on collision on Laurel near Felix required at least two separate helicopter medical evacuations to trauma centers. Hopefully everyone survived here, but by the looks of both vehicles, it’s possible that one or both victims may have serious or fatal injuries. Keep in mind this is on a residential street where the speed limit is 25MPH. The “jaws of life” were needed to extract the victims, and I heard the helicopter land on the football field at Santa Cruz high school for the evacuation. Thankfully, the field was right across the street.

Head On Crash in Felton Requires Helicopter Evacuation to Trauma Centers

In a busy night for medical helicopters locally, a head on crash on Mt. Herman Road in Felton on Wednesday night required a helicopter evacuation after a 23 year old man from Scotts Valley swerved his white pick up truck into oncoming traffic and hit a Mazda Miata. The victim in the Miata was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center and the suspect was transported by ambulance to Valley Medical, where he was also arrested for felony DUI.

Man With Knife Arrested Near Hotel Paradox

Saturday afternoon around 1:30PM, reports came in that a man was holding a knife in the lobby of the Hotel Paradox. Did he work in the kitchen there? Apparently not, as SCPD came and arrested him after he left the lobby headed towards the San Lorenzo river levee.

Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested With Loaded Gun

Last Thursday night around 8:30PM, SCPD officers arrested a 35 year old male from Santa Cruz for a domestic violence incident that occurred earlier in the day. The suspect had earlier gotten into a fight with a female victim in his home. The 31 year old victim reported that the suspect punched her in the head with brass knuckles. OUCH! She sustained a bruise on the side of her temple. SCPD received information that the suspect was also carrying a loaded firearm, and had a misdemeanor outstanding warrant for the suspect’s arrest. An alert officer located the suspect walking on Washburn Avenue where he was detained. The suspect was booked into jail for assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting injury on cohabitant, and carrying a concealed weapon. Since 2013, he’s been arrested 13 times. The County Shuffle!

Man Crashes and Burns Stolen Car on Highway One

Wednesday afternoon, Santa Cruz CHP reported a crash and resulting car fire along Highway 1 at the Buena Vista exit. After crashing the vehicle, the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was caught and arrested by CHP for suspected DUI and evading police.

Drunk and Battery at the Homeless Services Center

Monday morning around 11AM, reports came in about a drunk woman assaulting someone in front of the Homeless Services Center at 115 Coral street. The woman was arrested for being drunk in public and battery and sent to the county jail. On the County Shuffle!

Man Burned at Bonny Doon Beach

According to various reports, a 60 year old man was airlifted from Bonny Doon beach on Sunday morning with 50% burns to his body. No word on how he was burned or his condition.

Man Destroys Classic Impala Over Bud Light

Around 1AM on Sunday morning, a DUI collision injured two people and destroyed a classic 1965 Chevy Impala. The driver was arrested and taken into custody for felony DUI and hit and run. By the looks of the photo, it appears the accident happened as the driver was attempting to merge onto Highway 17 north from Highway 1 north.

Another Bum Fight on Almar

Around 8PM on Wednesday night, multiple reports came in that 3 males were fighting outside the Parish Publick House on Almar. One of the suspects was driving a red pickup with Montana plates. He apparently has a probation hit out of Tiburon but has an address listed as “transient Santa Cruz” (I can’t make this stuff up). The 2nd suspect was on parole.

  1. I read the Senile daily and then I learn what really happened in the Thursday Dump in this out-of-control drug and bum infested town. I suspect a whitewash of the news and “cover up” by the tourist industry driven Sentinel under pressure from SCPD, the city council, the Boardwalk and better business bureau. After all, brawls, bums, violence and drugs are not a city’s best calling card.

    • Thanks again for reading and commenting Grachus. You know where to go for the “vibrantly honest” news about Santa Cruz!

  2. Big Joe 77

All this going on and this is what the City of Santa Cruz’s Public Safety Committee chooses as it’s priorities:
    I. Call to Order

II. Approval of the Minutes of the April 17, 2017 Regular Meeting

III. Overview of the “Streets Smarts” Traffic Safety Outreach Program

IV. Consider Proposed Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones) Ordinance and Administrative Policy and Provide Recommendations

    V. Public Comment on Items Not on the Agenda

    Pathetic.

  3. It is so sad that if weren’t for you and your efforts on the Santa Mierda, the true crime and lawlessness of this town would not be reported. You are doing an incredible job of bringing these issues to light. No wonder many people just say some of us are hyper inflating Santa Cruz’s violence, drug, alcohol, mental illness problems when they are not being reported in any main stream media. A perception of a lack of safety is the reality for many of us in Santa Cruz and we are really being failed by our elected politicians and mental health system while the police and sheriff’s hands are tied in many instances due to policy from above. It’s really difficult to even have street smarts about where is the wrong place to be to avoid problems. Thanks again.

Please continue sending me the Santa Mierda

    • Not only are we drug and crime infested, we have millions and millions of dollars annually being spent on “homelessness issues” and not a damn thing changes.

      • Thanks Mabel. Maybe the city can spend a few million on another study on how they wasted their money. Or they could create some kind of volunteer citizen’s group to pander to by telling them their opinion actually matters. That’s cheaper.

    • Thanks Hank. There was some kind of technical glitch this week for subscribers. I’m working on fixing it. If you previously subscribed, you’re still on the list.

  5. Hey everyone that subscribes to the Dump! We apparently had some kind of technical glitch this week and for some reason the email didn’t go out to subscribers when I published last night. My apologies. I’m looking into the issue and hope to have it resolved by next week’s issue. If you’ve already subscribed, you’re still on the list and nothing more is required (but patience). Thanks as always for reading and commenting and subscribing!

  6. SandCastle

Thanks for keeping up with the craziness.
As mentioned above, if it weren’t for you, some of these terrible stories wouldn’t be known.
What you do is important, thank you!

  7. Just the facts

Thanks for the info and the pic on the head-on crash on Laurel. Even though it literally happened outside my front door I couldn’t get any info from SCPD or the Sentinal!
