Former Aptos Babysitter Gets 30 Years For Producing Child Pornography

This past Wednesday, a United States District Court Judge sentenced a 21 year old former Aptos baby sitter, camp counselor and teacher in training to 30 years in prison for producing and conspiring to distribute child pornography. The man pled guilty last October to producing child pornography of children he took care of in Aptos. Federal prosecutors say he molested at least two of the children he babysat, including one boy younger than 10 years old. Investigators found a video on his phone that shows him molesting one child.

Smoking Meth in the Kid’s Playhouse at the Santa Cruz Bible Church

Friday night around 10:30PM, SCPD responded to a report of a man who asked another guy to go smoke some meth in the kids playhouse on the playground at the Santa Cruz Bible Church on the 100 block of Frederick street in Seabright. The guy refused and the suspect apparently brandished a stun gun and threatened to tase him. SCPD sent multiple units to the area and fanned out looking for him. They eventually caught up to him at the nearest Taco Bell.

Getting Drunk and Beating Up Your Parents For Breakfast

Friday morning around 11AM, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 100 block of Riviera Drive in Aptos where they arrested a 38 year old who got drunk and beat on his elderly parents. He spent the weekend in jail before being released on bail this past Tuesday. I hope his parents changed the locks while he was gone.

Playing Bumper Cars in Downtown Santa Cruz

Around 1:00AM on Tuesday morning, SCPD responded to a report of a drunk plowing into parked cars on the 500 block of Walnut Avenue. When they arrived, they discovered a van that collided with a parked car, a parking sign, and hit a power pole so hard it sheared it from its base. A 44 year old man was arrested for DUI and booked into jail.

The Boy Was Lost

Also around 1AM Tuesday morning, SCPD received a report of a car driving across the east cliff railroad trestle bridge. When they responded, they found a driver of a brand new 2019 Toyota Camry attempting to drive over the trestle. He almost made it across, getting through the tunnel but he then reversed and crashed into a pillar which probably prevented them from driving off the bridge and into the San Lorenzo river. The 25 year old driver was arrested for DUI.

The Crystal Method

Last weekend, SCPD responded to a report about a man breaking into a vehicle on the 100 block of Chestnut Street in Santa Cruz. When they arrived, they located a 56 year old male transient with an active warrant for his arrest. He was also in possession of a bicycle (obviously stolen) with a filed off serial number, 75 grams of crystal methamphetamine and a cap gun. SCPD arrested him without incident. He’s been arrested 13 times since 2014.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Monday morning, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on Soquel-San Jose Road after a report of a burglar in the home. The suspect fled the house before deputies arrived but the resident managed to get a photo of the man and his vehicle. Deputies quickly spotted the suspect’s vehicle in the Hilltop Road neighborhood, where they stopped and arrested a 39 year old man for burglary, outstanding warrants, and a probation violation. Probation violation? You don’t say! You never see that happen here.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving Part II

Last Friday around 7AM, Santa Cruz Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 22 year old male at a residence on the 2200 block of Capitola Road on weapons charges, as well as possession of stolen property, being under the influence of a controlled substance, giving false information to deputies, and of course violating probation. The gift that keeps on giving us guys like this.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving Part III

Saturday night around 5:30PM, SCPD responded to the downtown area near Pacific and Spruce, where they arrested a 42 year old man on a number of charges, including assault and battery with a deadly weapon, vandalism, and of course – a probation violation! The number one public safety hazard in Santa Cruz? County Probation! Last check he was still sitting in county jail with a $25K bail hold. How long until they let him out on triple secret probation?

The Gift That Keeps On Giving Part IV

Sunday night around 5:30PM, Santa Cruz Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 41 year old man at 38th and Reposa on a laundry list of charges. Possession of an illegal weapon, possession of meth, and of course, the usual probation violation. He’s been arrested 21 times since 2013. Maybe not giving him county probation for the 20th time will save us all a lot of time, money, and frustration?

Why Evade the Turnstile?

Saturday morning around 3AM, a woman with an outstanding warrant who was apparently drunk jumped off the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. I guess she was rescued because she was arrested for both the warrant and being drunk in public shortly after being fished out of the water. It must have been a bad warrant. Or maybe she was really drunk. But everyone knows the jail is a big old turnstile with a “no vacancy” sign posted out front.

Getting Fried at Frenchy’s

Last Saturday around 5PM, Santa Cruz Sheriff’s deputies responded to Frenchy’s on the 3000 block of Portola Drive and arrested a 57 year old man for trying to use someone else’s credit card, possession of meth, and resisting arrest. He’s apparently still in county jail on a $10k bail hold. He’s been arrested 5 times since 2013, 3 of them coming in the past 6 months.

Drunk Woman Smashes and Dashes Near Cabrillo College

Last Friday morning, the CHP responded to a collision on Soquel Drive near Cabrillo College in Aptos. A 50 year old Ben Lomond woman was driving an Acura MDX when she collided with a fence and then fled the scene on foot leaving an injured passenger behind. The woman fled onto the Cabrillo College campus and campus administrators sent out an alert to employees to be on the lookout. A Cabrillo College employee spotted the woman hiding in some trees and alerted CHP who arrested for felony DUI and hit & run.

Watsonville Playground Torched By Arsonist

Early Tuesday morning, an arsonist set fire to a play structure on a children’s playground in Muzzio Park in Watsonville. Watsonville Police were patrolling the area of West Front Street after midnight when they came across a fully engulfed playground. According to investigators, the playground was severely damaged in the fire, causing $50,000 to $60,000 worth of damage. Police believe the fire to be arson since officers saw wood piled underneath the structure while it burned. Yup, that’s a pretty good sign of arson. Or it could have been someone’s stuff.

Downtown Forward?

So this past week, there was a meeting by a local group called Downtown Forward, who I had never heard of before. My first thought was great, just what we need. Another non-profit or PAC. I’m still not entirely sure what they are. They seem to be an advocacy group, might be a non-profit. They seem to be currently advocating for a parking garage slash new library. Cynthia Mathews seems to be one of the group’s de facto leaders, and I know she was a big supporter of burying the library under an ugly parking garage. I didn’t go to the meeting but I heard a story about how that Nazi saluting kook woman from every city council meeting threatened to spit on the food at the meeting. Lovely! She was there with Barnacle Bob Noise, looking for TV cameras or Jessica York.

Why does this have to be so bipolar. Why can’t the city find something that works for the majority of people, and not just special interests. I read this week about a new Capitola library being built, on top of the old space, and guess what? It doesn’t come attached with a mammoth parking garage! This whole battle here seems to be more over political willpower than pragmatic use of space and money. The city council, and the city manager and his staff needs to stop trying to shoehorn and foist unpopular ideas on the community. It shows you’re not listening!

  1. Here is the lead article on NPR today, re Seattle and mentally ill people and how the thinking there regarding what should be a felony, not a misdemeanor, is changing. The article refers to the video “Seattle is Dying.” This should make you feel vindicated! Here is the link:

    https://www.npr.org/2019/07/12/736612514/seattle-faces-backlash-after-easing-up-on-punishing-crimes-involving-mental-illn

  2. Why do people keep getting paroled? Do they go before a judge and the judge decides or is it automatic?
Just wondering because it is ludicrous.

Love your headlines! You’re a natural!

  3. Chris Jordan

You always keep me in stitches laughing! Began with the meth head running to Taco Bell… wrong border dude!!!

  4. Newest addition to the Toyota line of off road vehicles for 2019…….The Trestle Jumper. It runs in gas….and alcohol.

Also re: Mr Glover……..The damage has already been done and no amount of Dru Splaining on a radio show or podcast will change the fact that he has earned his recall.

  5. “He’s been arrested 13 times since 2014.”
Can’t end on 13, that is unlucky number. 14 coming right up!

  6. ucsc needs a criminology dept. lol

  7. Why the attitude against a parking garage on top of the library? There’s also affordable housing units gracing this well thought out, multi use center! This is standard practice in a lot of urban areas and yes, downtown is considered urban. It’s win win win. Win for the community as we get a state of the art new library, win for parking revenue and win for affordable housing. Smh…

    • It will be an ugly eyesore, its not needed, no one wants it.

      • Yup. These are basically my reasons too. I’m downtown every day and there’s never a shortage of public parking. There’s so much public parking downtown people park their homes on wheels and live in them there. Go check out the parking lot next to the Red Church every single day. More than half empty, with a handful of RV campers squatting there. It’s not needed.

  8. Here’s my question about the recall election (assuming there is one). Let’s say Glover and Krohn were voted into office with several thousand votes each. I have no idea what the actual number is. I’m just speculating. Ok, now let’s say the recall election takes place and only 100 people bother to participate and the recallers win by a score of 60 to 40. In that scenario, will Glover and Krohn be recalled? Just wondering…

  9. Reality Check

Ken, the answer to your question is “Yes.” DruG got ~11K votes in the last election. If the 8K signatures to qualify the recall, the recall for each candidate must win by 50%+1. So in your scenario, if 100 voted, they would be ousted with 51 votes for. I assume the replacement candidates would be elected on a plurality (top two vote getters.)

  10. Barnacle Bob—made my day. He is like those darn barnacles.

  11. Prop 47: Making our streets less safe and cop’s jobs harder. Well-done California!
